但是，随着隐性采访的广泛使用，它开始受到质疑。由于记者采访经验的增加和科技发展带 来的采访设备的进步，尤其是新闻受众对新闻内容要求的不断提高，实施隐性采访的记者仅用“旁 观者”的身份采获的新闻很难吸引受众的关注了。于是，一些记者开始伪装自己，介入新闻，有的 甚至直接成了某些新闻事件的“导演”。这种用欺骗手段采获新闻，在道德评价上是令人困惑的， 也是备受争议的。
