Abstract
"Transplantation represents a highly successful means of treating a variety of human illnesses. However, the number of transplants performed is limited by a shortage of human organs and tissues1. Xenotransplantation, the transplantation of organs, tissues or cells from one species to another, if applied to man, would offer the possibility of a huge supply of organs, tissues and cells for transplantation thereby relieving the «chronic» shortage of human donors. However, before xenotransplantation becomes a clinical reality, there are practical challenges that must be overcome. One is rejection, the process by which the body of the transplant recipient attempts to rid itself of the transplant. Another is to ensure the correct functioning, across species barriers, of the transplant in its new host. Also, there is the need to minimize the likelihood of the introduction of new infectious agents into the human population via the transplant". ["Trasplante representa un altamente medios de éxito del tratamiento de una variedad de enfermedades humanas . Sin embargo , el número de trasplantes realizados está limitada por una escasez de órganos y tejidos1 humanos. Los xenotrasplantes , el trasplante de órganos, tejidos o células de una especie a otro, si se aplica al hombre , ofrecería la posibilidad de un gran suministro de órganos , tejidos y células para trasplante aliviando así la escasez « crónica » de donantes humanos . Sin embargo , antes de los xenotrasplantes se convierte en una realidad clínica , hay desafíos prácticos que deben ser superar . Uno de ellos es el rechazo, el proceso por el cual el cuerpo del trasplante destinatario intenta librarse de la trasplante. Otra es la de velar por la correcto funcionamiento , a través de especies barreras, del trasplante en su nuevo huésped . Además, existe la necesidad de minimizar la probabilidad de que la introducción de la nueva agentes infecciosos en la humana población a través del trasplante".]
