Abstract
This article sets out how the politics of local Islam in Aceh has been dominated by modern Islamic discourses with a “symbolic-formalistic” character. It describes the transitions in political Islamic discourses and practices of Aceh provoked by war, the GAM movement, and the tsunami. Following these transitional processes, Islam in Aceh has now been shaped into a new identity in which the Acehnese people themselves are critically engaged. The paper examines the context of Islam that characterises religious plurality in Aceh and shows the dynamic of Islam in Aceh. The shifting context of Islam in Aceh through the transitional processes is the result not only of globalisation, but also and more importantly of Islamic politisation exerted by the local political authority. This has produced a shift from Islamic practices constructed on the basis of “Islamic sufism” to practices based on “Islamic syariah”, which is relatively more dominant in the political sphere. The character and shape of Islam have been developed by the political authority more effectively than by the people or public awareness. The rise of Islamic syariah in Aceh reveals an Islamic ideological regime in contrast to the early history of Islam in Aceh
