Abstract
"The 1990s was marked by a process of review of governmental policy towards the attainment of the goal of gender equality and equity. To a large extent, this review process was facilitated and strengthened by the preparation for the Fourth World Conference on Women which allowed for assessments and reviews both of the achievements and as well as the strategies for the promotion of gender equality. In this review, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean/Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (ECLAC/CDCC) secretariat convened the Third Ministerial Meeting on Women, 4-6 October, 1999 at which a number of recommendations were made. The meeting acknowledged that the member States had all signed and ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (the Women's Convention). However, the delegates urged the strengthening of the process of review and reform of legislation and of administrative and bureaucratic practices to ensure the full compliance with, in particular, the Women's Convention. This paper seeks to contribute to that process by providing a review and assessment of equality legislation in the Caribbean subregion, with particular attention to the English-speaking Caribbean" ["La década de 1990 estuvo marcada por un proceso de revisión de la política gubernamental hacia la consecución del objetivo de la igualdad y equidad de género . En gran medida , este proceso de revisión fue facilitado y fortalecido por la preparación de la Cuarta Conferencia Mundial sobre la Mujer que permitió evaluaciones y críticas tanto de los logros y así como las estrategias para la promoción de la igualdad de género . En esta revisión , la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Desarrollo del Caribe / Caribe y el Comité de Cooperación ( CEPAL / CDCC) Secretaría convocó la Tercera Reunión Ministerial sobre la Mujer , 4-6 de octubre de 1999 en la que se hizo una serie de recomendaciones. En la reunión se reconoció que los Estados miembros toda la había firmado y ratificado la Convención sobre la Eliminación de todas las Formas de Discriminación contra la Mujer ( Convención de la Mujer ) . Sin embargo , los delegados instaron al fortalecimiento del proceso de revisión y reforma de la legislación y de las prácticas administrativas y burocráticas para garantizar el pleno cumplimiento , en particular , la Convención de la Mujer. En este trabajo se pretende contribuir a ese proceso al proporcionar una revisión y evaluación de la legislación sobre la igualdad en la subregión del Caribe , con especial atención al Caribe de habla Inglés"]
