Abstract
This writing views the importance of foreign language instruction perspective in redefining the phenomenon of multicultural education. The basic assumption explored is that language is not monolithic since it contains the history, culture, and knowledge of a society. When two languages contact in regional or national level, cross-cultural competencies are needed in order to appreciate the differences between the cultures. The failure in understanding the existing differences commonly leads to conflict. Specifically, this writing discusses the influence spectrum of language contact, language and culture ambivalence, cross-cultural competency in foreign language instruction, and relationship between the foreign language instruction and multicultural education.
