Abstract
Contemporary business is characterized by two related phenomena—globalization and information technology. Business is now global and finds itself in the Information Age as opposed to the Industrial Age. Propelled by developing technology the new ways of doing business and of using information and technology have in many respects outstripped general moral consciousness, rendering traditional moral intuitions inapplicable and creating a host of issues on which there is no moral consensus either worldwide or within any given society. Developments have been too rapid for their full effects to be registered, assimilated, discussed, morally evaluated and added to the store of common moral knowledge and sense. Part of the task of those in business ethics is to bring these issues to public consciousness for general discussion and consideration. To the extent that the overall good is promoted and that individual human rights are not violated, global outsourcing is ethically justified. Information technology has facilitated and accelerated the globalization of business. In the process it has raised new issues or old issues in new ways. I have addressed only two of them, intellectual property and the outsourcing of services. The task of those in the field is to clarify the ethical issues involved in these and other areas, and help promote intellectually honest discussions of these issues for the development of consensus and perhaps appropriate legislation—or changes in existing legislation—on a global scale.
