Abstract
"El Islam es, desde sus orígenes, un código moral; una religión que constituye también, en su unidad de fe, una unidad cultural, y sintetiza un nuevo modo de vida. Dentro del mundo islamizado sólo un recinto sirve como punto de reunión masiva de la umma (comunidad de musulmanes) los viernes al mediodía: la mezquita. Esta es el símbolo arquitectónico del Islam, ha acompañado a la religión durante toda su historia y, en las últimas décadas, ha cobrado un protagonismo extraordinario en la ascendente ola islámica. Etimológicamente, la palabra mezquita proviene del árabe masyid, lugar donde el musulmán se postra a rezar. En su origen el vocablo designaba todos los sitios de adoración, aunque con el tiempo quedó la mezquita como sitio por excelencia para alabar a Alá. La casa del profeta Mahoma en Medina, completada en el año 632 de n.e., se convirtió en el primer lugar de rezo comunitario, la primera mezquita del Islam" ["Islam is, from the outset, a moral code; a religion that is also in its unity of faith, a cultural unit, and synthesizes a new way of life.
